HP’s BSM is aimed at end-to-end monitoring of services at the data center and is anchored on its RTSM. BSM is considered to be an approach, a strategy and a methodology to align elements of IT with the business goals. BSM enables real-time monitoring of all of the office resources, both hardware and software resources through use of the company’s IT infrastructure with all of the processes and resources directed towards achieving the business goals. It primarily aims to achieve the operational objectives of the business at all times by identifying and through visual presentation of the dependencies that exist between the different processes, applications and infrastructure that exists internally and externally in a business environment. As IT is primarily used to resolve business issues by extending support, use of BSM helps reduce downtime and resolution time while improving operational efficiency, performance and communication.
Use of BSM provides approaching IT services’ management with a business point of view by directly focusing on the business needs. BSM, in contrast to IT Service Management (ITSM) software that focuses with an IT perspective, focuses on the business perspective of using IT. BSM vendors like HP focus on the the benefits of BSM in terms of utilization of ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) to provide a means of competitive advantage through dashboard visualization of business metrics through mapping of IT resources and business processes.
